Electrical system repair

Modern Cars Are Rolling Computers

A modern vehicle has dozens of electronic control modules talking to each other over data networks. When something goes wrong in these systems, the symptoms can be misleading. An ABS warning light might be caused by a wheel speed sensor, a wiring fault, or a failing control module. An airbag light could be a clock spring in the steering column, a connector under the seat, or a module issue. Chasing electrical problems without proper diagnosis is expensive guesswork.

We diagnose and repair the full range of automotive electrical systems: engine control units, transmission computers, ABS and stability control, airbag systems, seat heaters, power windows and locks, amplifiers and audio systems, and parasitic battery drain. We have the diagnostic tools to read manufacturer-specific fault codes, not just generic OBD-II, and the experience to interpret what those codes actually mean.

Diagnosis Before Parts

The most common mistake we see from other shops is throwing parts at electrical problems. A customer comes in having already replaced a sensor, a relay, and a wiring harness at another shop, and the light is still on. That's because nobody actually diagnosed the root cause. We start with proper testing: measuring signals, checking grounds, verifying power supplies, and reading live data from the control modules. We find the actual problem, then fix it once.

For intermittent issues, the kind that never seem to act up at the shop, we can set up data logging and monitoring to capture the fault when it actually occurs. Electrical gremlins are frustrating, but they always leave a trail if you know where to look.

SAAB Expertise

SAAB's Pioneering Electrical Architecture

SAAB was ahead of its time electrically. The Trionic engine management system used ion-sensing technology through the spark plugs to detect knock and misfires, eliminating the need for a conventional knock sensor and providing cylinder-individual combustion monitoring. The Direct Ignition (DI) cassette that makes this possible is a sophisticated piece of engineering, and when it fails, you need someone who understands the system, not just someone who can swap parts.

Beyond the engine management, SAABs have complex electrical systems throughout: the SID (SAAB Information Display) and ACC (Automatic Climate Control) displays that communicate over I-bus, the sophisticated audio systems (especially in Harman Kardon-equipped cars), the security systems with their twice-learned keys, and the CAN bus architecture that ties it all together. These systems rival or surpass what many newer cars have in terms of complexity.

We have SAAB-specific diagnostic software, Tech 2 and later tools, that can read the full range of SAAB control modules, not just engine codes. When your SID is throwing cryptic messages or your ACC panel is acting up, we can actually talk to those systems and figure out what's going on.

For non-SAAB vehicles, availability of this service may vary depending on the vehicle and scope of work. Give us a call and we'll let you know if we can help.
