Seattle summers are getting warmer, and a working AC system is no longer a luxury. We handle the full range of automotive climate control work: compressor diagnosis and replacement, leak detection, condenser and evaporator service, and R134a refrigerant recharge. If your system just needs a top-off, we'll tell you that. If there's a deeper issue, we'll find it before dumping refrigerant into a leaking system.
Common signs something's off: warm air from the vents when the AC is on, weak airflow even at full blast, a musty or chemical smell when the system kicks in, or a compressor that cycles on and off rapidly. Any of these are worth getting checked before the problem compounds.
Vehicles built before the mid-1990s originally used R12 (Freon) refrigerant, which has been phased out and is now expensive and difficult to source. We convert older R12 systems to use R134a refrigerant, which means replacing key components like the receiver-drier, adjusting the expansion valve, and ensuring the system is compatible with the new refrigerant's operating pressures.
A proper conversion isn't just swapping fittings and topping off. We make sure the system actually cools effectively with the new refrigerant, which requires understanding the engineering differences between the two systems.
SAAB Expertise
SAAB's Automatic Climate Control (ACC) systems were sophisticated for their era, integrating cabin temperature sensors, solar sensors, and electronically controlled blend doors. On the 9-5 and later 9-3 models, the ACC system ties into the car's CAN bus, which means electrical issues elsewhere can sometimes masquerade as AC problems. We know how to trace those connections and diagnose accurately.
For classic SAAB 900s and early 9000s still running the original R12 systems, the conversion to R134a is one of our most common jobs. These cars are absolutely worth keeping on the road, and a properly converted AC system makes daily driving them in Georgetown summers perfectly comfortable. We've done hundreds of these conversions and know exactly what each model needs.
For non-SAAB vehicles, availability of this service may vary depending on the vehicle and scope of work. Give us a call and we'll let you know if we can help.
